Fixing Chrome Update Error 0x80070005: Resolving “Access Denied”

If you encounter Error Code 3: 0x80070005 while trying to update Google Chrome, you are facing a classic “Access Denied” scenario. This error occurs when the Chrome updater lacks the necessary administrative permissions to write new files to your hard drive or modify the registry.

Essentially, Windows is “protecting” your files so well that it is preventing your browser from improving its own security. Here is how to grant Chrome the clearance it needs.

Step 1: Run Chrome as an Administrator

The simplest way to bypass permission blocks is to temporarily elevate Chrome’s authority.

  1. Close all open Chrome windows.
  2. Find the Chrome shortcut on your desktop or in the Start menu.
  3. Right-click the icon and select Run as administrator.
  4. Once Chrome opens, go to Help > About Google Chrome.
  5. The update should now proceed without the “Access Denied” message.

Step 2: Check Folder Permissions

Sometimes, the folder where Chrome is installed has its permissions set to “Read-only” or has restricted user access.

  1. Press Windows Key + R, type %ProgramFiles%, and hit Enter.
  2. Locate the Google folder.
  3. Right-click the folder and select Properties.
  4. Go to the Security tab and click Edit.
  5. Ensure your user account (or “Users”) has Full Control or at least Write permissions checked.
  6. Click Apply and try the update again.

Step 3: Temporarily Disable Security Software

In 2026, many “Aggressive Mode” antivirus programs or EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) tools can flag the Chrome update process as suspicious activity because it attempts to modify system files.

  1. Briefly disable your third-party antivirus (such as Bitdefender, Norton, or McAfee).
  2. If you are using Windows Defender, go to Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage settings and toggle Real-time protection to Off.
  3. Run the Chrome update.
  4. Important: Turn your protection back on immediately after the update finishes.

Step 4: Use the Google Update Troubleshooter

If the “Access Denied” error persists, the Windows Update service itself might be conflicting with Google’s update service.

  1. In the Windows Search bar, type Troubleshoot settings.
  2. Select Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and click Run. While this is designed for Windows OS updates, it often resets the background intelligent transfer services that Chrome relies on for its own downloads.
