Locked Out! Decoding OneDrive Error 0x8004de85 and Credential Mismatches

Seeing Error 0x8004de85 usually means OneDrive is confused about who is trying to sign in. This happens frequently when your personal Microsoft account and your work or school account get tangled up, or when old login details are stuck in your system.

Here are the best ways to clear up the account confusion and get your files syncing again.

Fix 1: Unlink and relink your PC

The fastest way to fix an account mismatch is to disconnect your computer from OneDrive and set it up fresh.

  1. Click the OneDrive cloud icon in your taskbar.
  2. Click the gear icon and select Settings.
  3. Go to the Account tab.
  4. Click Unlink this PC and confirm your choice.
  5. OneDrive will open a new setup screen. Sign back in using your correct work or school email address.

Fix 2: Clear your Windows credentials

Windows saves your passwords to make signing in faster. Sometimes these saved passwords cause a conflict. Clearing them forces OneDrive to ask for your correct login details.

  1. Click the Start button and type Credential Manager.
  2. Open the app and click on Windows Credentials.
  3. Look through the list for any entries that contain OneDrive or MicrosoftOffice.
  4. Click the down arrow next to each of these entries and select Remove.
  5. Restart your computer and try signing into OneDrive again.

Fix 3: Sign out of other Office apps

Sometimes other programs like Word or Excel hold onto the wrong account. This will block OneDrive from signing in properly.

  1. Open Word or Excel.
  2. Click on File in the top left corner.
  3. Select Account at the bottom left.
  4. Under your user information, click Sign out.
  5. Close the application.
  6. Open OneDrive and sign in. You can then sign back into your Office apps with the correct account.

Fix 4: Reset the OneDrive app

If nothing else works, resetting the OneDrive app will clear its internal settings and connection cache. This process will not delete any of your actual files.

  1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Copy and paste this exact text: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
  3. Press Enter.
  4. The OneDrive cloud icon will disappear from your taskbar. Wait a minute or two for it to reappear.
  5. If the icon does not come back, open the Run dialog again and enter: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe
