Seeing a generic “Something went wrong” message along with error code 0x8004def4 is incredibly annoying. This error usually pops up when the OneDrive sync engine crashes or your local installation becomes corrupted.
Since the error does not point to one specific problem, you have to run through a few standard repairs to get things working again.
Fix 1: Restart the OneDrive app
Sometimes the sync engine just needs a fresh start. Force closing and restarting the app is the quickest way to test this.
- Right click the Start button and open Task Manager.
- Look for Microsoft OneDrive in the list of running processes.
- Right click the app and select End task.
- Open your Start menu, search for OneDrive, and launch the application again.
Fix 2: Unlink and relink your PC
If a simple restart fails, your account connection might be damaged. Unlinking your computer will clear out the bad connection data.
- Click the OneDrive cloud icon in your taskbar.
- Click the gear icon and choose Settings.
- Go to the Account tab.
- Click Unlink this PC and confirm your choice.
- Sign back in with your email address when the new setup screen appears.
Fix 3: Reset the OneDrive application
Resetting the app is a powerful fix that clears out all background configurations without deleting your stored files.
- Press the Windows key + R to open the Run box.
- Copy and paste this exact command:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset - Press Enter.
- The cloud icon will disappear from your taskbar. Wait a minute for it to come back.
- If the icon stays hidden, open the Run box again and enter:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe
Fix 4: Reinstall OneDrive
If the sync engine is deeply corrupted, a reset might not be enough. A clean installation is your best final option.
- Click the Start button and open Settings.
- Go to Apps and then Installed apps.
- Scroll down until you find Microsoft OneDrive.
- Click the three dots next to the app and choose Uninstall.
- Once removed, download the latest version of OneDrive directly from the Microsoft website and run the installer.
